Dorky Kyle Ensley's success also seems troubling-he has a powerful voice, but he's very theatrical and seems to have borrowed Al Jolson's stage moves. Meanwhile the grating and mediocre Carly Smithson (tattooed chick with visa problems in season 5) was fawned over by the judges. I thought Angela Martin (single mother of a sick child) was great, yet she was sent packing. We also bid a predictable farewell to likeable, but average singers like Leo Marlowe, Suzanne Toon and Perrie Cataldo (single parents), and most regrettably, the joyful Jeffery Lampkin. ![]() I hope she heeds the advice to find some other layers. I was blown away by David Hernandez, and continue to be impressed by Ramielle Maluby (tiny girl, huge voice), Michael Johns (Aussie hunk), and Amanda Overmyer (biker nurse), though I thought Simon was dead-on in warning Amanda that her Joplinesque delivery might get monotonous over time. Finally, no time was wasted on sight-seeing trips to Venice Beach. There also seemed to be a real commitment to showing us significant amounts of performances, instead of the usual throwing three-note snippets at us and daring us to keep up. Sure, some of my favorites seemed missing in action (Pia Easley?), but we were shown a decent portion of many of the singers we're already familiar with, which was great. We were also treated to a respectable amount of follow-up on singers we've seen before, which was a departure from past seasons. In the week's last performance, singers rehearsed and auditioned with back-up singers and a band-another terrific tweak that gave contestants a taste of what's in store for them if they make the Top 24. Another change allowed Idol hopefuls to play an instrument at their first audition, which was interesting, though not usually successful (drummer Jake Mellma's "Hooked on a Feeling" was particularly awful). ![]()
